Andrea's Quinceanera

I cannot say enough about this event or this young woman!  She is beautiful, and talented, and gracious.

The event was coordinated by my good friend Pearl Taylor and included a choreographed waltz on a multi-level stage, performed by the court of 30.  There was a candy bar, a photo booth, caricaturist, and musical selections by Shaggy from Z104.  Dinner was tapas, served family style.  It was amazing.

I was brought in to do floral/event design for this event about 6 months ago.  The "under the sea" theme is representative of the family's interests and can be seen throughout their magnificent home.  Mother and daughter have great taste and had key things that they wanted to incorporate - sea glass and the colors of sand and sea.  I provided those items and more - illuminated tropical centerpieces, coral, linens, custom table numbers, spandex chair covers, shapes, and projection screens and the items for the candy bar.  The lighting by Charlie Pike,  Pike Media Resource, was spectacular!  My photos do not do it justice but they will have to do until Don Monteaux provides his:

KnittaPalooza 2008!

For the last 3 years I have coordinated KnittaPalooza!  What is it you ask?  My yarn store client, Ewe Knit Kits & Yarn, brings together the most sought after knitting instructors and die-hard knitters for a weekend of classes, camaraderie, and prizes!  The event even features a fashion show of articles from yarn manufacturers and customers.

Participants come from all over for the chance to learn new techniques and be with like-minded people of all ages, races, and yes - gender (we sometimes get a lone male)!  A good time is had by all!

Interview: Maya of Tiffanys by Maya

Today I am chatting with entrepreneur and designer Maya Warburton of Tiffanys by Maya.  Anyone who has walked through the doors of her elegant and chic salon knows that Maya is always on hand to lend her expert guidance to brides seeking that perfect dress.  What you probably don't know is the winding path that led her to the wedding community in Norfolk.

   Image:  Keith Cephus

Maya Wharburton, Tiffanys by MayaMaya pursued a career in the fashion industry in Boston, MA.  She was Director of Operations for the Gianni Versace boutique for three years and later, Ford Model Management. Maya moved to New York to work for Vera Wang at her flagship bridal house. After two months, she was promoted to Sales Manager of Vera Wang's bridesmaids' salon.

Love brought this superstar to Virginia where she became a bridal consultant for Tiffanys in August of 2003. She quickly became the top sales performer and was named General Manager in January 2004. A short six months later she bought the store and gave it her name.  Tiffanys of Norfolk became Tiffanys by Maya, and a new era was born!

Fast forward

Wedster:  What's new in bridal?

Maya:  We're seeing a more fitted silhouette on the runways in Chicago and New York.  Pleats and lace are also big.

Wedster:  What about strapless gowns.  Are they still popular?

Maya:  Strapless will always be popular, but designers are showing lots of cover ups - boleros, chapel veils and mantillas....

Wedster:  Besides Yellow and Gray, what are the color trends?

Maya:  Olive and Gold, White and Wheat, Sapphire and Fuschia, Black and Pewter, Pink and Green are hot!

Wedster:  You also carry tuxedos.  What's new for the men?

Maya:  We're offering chocolate tuxedos, white dinner jackets, and suits in midnight blue and linen colored which are great for destination weddings.

Wedster:  Anything else our readers should know about ...?

Maya:  Tiffanys by Maya will soon become Maya Couture, bridal fashions!

Wedster:  Why the change?

Maya:  I wanted a name that was more reflective our brand and our product, like designer and custom gowns and accessories.

Wedster:  Tell me more!

Maya:  I've designed my first collection of bridesmaid dressed to be introduced in the fall of 2008!  Also my design team and I will offer brides the opportunity to collaborate with us to create the one-of-a-kind gown of her dreams!

Wedster:  Congratulations!  Where can we find your collection?

Maya:  Exclusively at Maya Couture but the designs will be featured on our website and can be ordered and shipped to clients everywhere.

Wedster:  Wow! I can't wait to stop by and see everything we talked about.  Thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to bring us up to date!

Coral: A hot color for your Spring or Summer Wedding

Betsy, our intern for the Spring semester, has put together her first inspiration board.

Coral is one of the more popular color trends in weddings for Spring and Summer.  Orange-pink hues ranging from melon to fuchsia can be paired with accents for a bright and fun occasion or for a more casual, romantic feel.  Lime green, bright fuchsia and a rich orange can make your flowers, reception, and your bridesmaids really stand out.

Coral inspiration board

This inspiration board uses lighter coral tones throughout for a more casual feel.  The colors I used were inspired by the tones in the colors blocks (top row).  I loved the lighter pink and coral hues, and the orange is a great accent that really makes the colors pop.  The bridesmaids’ dresses stand out with brighter flowers and a gray sash, another great accent for coral or melon colors.  The bridal bouquet is full of roses with the same beautiful tones, while the cake and invitations tie the theme together.  To make your color stand out even more, try a signature cocktail like this peach cosmopolitan.

Eco-Friendly Centerpieces

We've posted about ways that brides can have an eco-friendly and beautiful wedding.  One way to minimize waste and maximize style is with a centerpiece that lives on after the event.  Now don't think potted fern - think exotic orchids and succulents accented with stones and bark and mosses and such - OH MY!

I stopped by Helga Macko Flowers and was captivated by these gorgeous arrangements on display in her studio:

Helga Macko Phalaenopsis Planter

Orchid and succulents w/ moss and twigs in clean, modern container

Helga Macko Square Planter

Orchids, succulents, twigs, and moss in bark lined glass planter

These can be given to guests as a whole or separated as they are individually potted!  How great is that!

Helga Macko is a genius and I love working with her!  If you have an opportunity or an occasion call her studio in the Great Neck area of Virginia Beach 757.412.4444. Perhaps she'll show you some of the amazing and unusual flowers that she always seems to have on hand!

Color Trend!

By now you all know that yellow is THE hot color for 2008!  It is showing up everywhere from fashion runways to home furnishings - usually in combination with greys and the other 'it' color olive.  Very chic and oh so sophisticated!

The trend actually started to emerge last year with yellow showing up as an accent color to the extremely popular black and white.  That combo is very striking and dramatic.  Here are some of my favorites:
